Le niveau de la mer monte plus vite que prévu

Dans le monde entier, les changements climatiques entraîneront d’importantes modifications des glaciers, du pergélisol et des océans au cours du 21e siècle. Ceci ressort d’un rapport du Conseil mondial du climat (GIEC), publié mercredi à Monaco. Selon ce document, l’élévation du niveau de la mer jusqu’en 2100 atteint entre 43 et 84 centimètres et submerge des régions habitées aujourd’hui par des centaines de millions de personnes. Et de 2015 à 2100, les glaciers perdent de 18 à 36 pour cent de leur masse dans le monde, et même plus de 80 pour cent en Europe. Si les gaz à effet de serre continuent d’être émis en abondance, entre 49 et 89 pour cent du pergélisol peu profond pourrait dégeler d’ici 2100 au détriment de la stabilité du terrain.

Call for Abstracts: MRI Sessions at AGU Fall meeting 2019

Taking place in San Francisco 9-13 December 2019, the AGU Fall Meeting 2019 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to draw inspiration from each other and show how earth and space science enables a more resilient and sustainable future for all. There are a number of exciting, mountain-related sessions – including two convened by the MRI. Abstract submission is now open and the deadline for all submissions is Wednesday 31 July.

Call for Papers of Special Issue on "Mountain landscapes: protected areas, ecosystem services and future challenges"

This Special Issue aims at addressing important knowledge gaps focusing on basic understanding of ecological functions and its drivers of change in mountain landscapes as well as on societal trends in and outside mountain regions to be able to scope with future challenges. A particular focus is set on protected areas that are interested in the management and the preservation of the biodiversity and the landscapes, through scientific research, environmental education, and the promotion and the development of sustainable tourism.

This can lead to more competition or new conflicts in water use, both locally and across borders. This Policy Brief highlights the needs for political action and management options to avoid potential water conflicts in future.
