Every year the Swiss Geological Society presents the following prizes:
- The Paul Niggli Medal
- The Amanz Gressly Prize
- A cash prize of CHF 3000 for the best MSc thesis at a Swiss institution
- Travel and conference awards to attend national and international conferences
- The Oswald Heer-Preis (2017)
The Paul Niggli Medal 2019 was awarded to Jonas B. Ruh (now at ETH Zürich) in recognition of his outstanding research in the field of structural geology and geodynamics, combining numerical modelling and field observation to understand large scale tectonic processes
Citation by Taras Gerya in the Swiss Journal of Geosciences. The prize ceremony took place during the plenary session of the Swiss Geoscience Meeting on November 22nd, 2019 in Fribourg.
On November 22nd, 2019, the best MSc 2019 award was given to Philippos Garefalakis from the Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of Bern. The award ceremony took place during the SGM2019 meeting in Fribourg. Philippos received the CHF 3000 cash prize from the president of the Swiss Geological Society, Jörg Hermann. The title of the MSc thesis was: "Tectonic, eustatic and surface controls on the Burdigalian transgression recorded in the Upper Marine Molasse in Switzerland"
