ICOS Switzerland is funded for the next project phase

ICOS Switzerland, the Swiss contribution to the European Research Infrastructure ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), has received funding from the Swiss National Foundation for the next project phase. The ICOS Switzerland consortium is looking forward to another four years within the Pan-European effort ICOS RI, which aims at harmonized and long-term measurements of Europe’s greenhouse gas balance.

ICOS stations: Ecosystem station Davos & Atmosphere station Jungfraujoch

ICOS Switzerland (ICOS-CH) gets funding for another four years from the Swiss National Foundation. This secures the ambitious goal of ICOS-CH to set up and maintain two official ICOS stations in Switzerland.

ICOS is a Pan-European Research Infrastructure (RI) with the aim to quantify and understand Europe’s greenhouse gas balance. This requires long-term, harmonized and high-precision measurements across Europe. With this standardized effort, measurements will become comparable across different research groups and countries. All data collected within ICOS RI will be openly available via the ICOS Carbon Portal. An official ICOS station can be an atmosphere, an ecosystem or an ocean station. Currently, the network consists of 12 member countries, including over hundred stations where greenhouse gas concentrations and fluxes are measured. However, there is no official ICOS station yet. Each station has to pass a so-called labeling process in order to become an official ICOS station. ICOS-CH was among the first ones to apply for this process.

ICOS-CH is a cooperation of several Swiss research institutions (ETH Zurich, Empa, WSL, University of Bern, University of Basel and MeteoSwiss), the national focal point is at ETH Zurich. It contributes to ICOS RI with one atmosphere station (Jungfraujoch) and one ecosystem station (Davos). Both are Candidate Class 1 sites, meaning that they both strive for the highest standard an ICOS station can reach, and both are currently being evaluated in the labeling process. This requires the fulfillment of the high ICOS measurement standards and the upgrade of current installations as well as the design and installation of new measurement devices. Further, the dataflow to the Carbon Portal needs to be set up near real-time.
