Swiss Collaborative Centre for Promoting Sustainable Industry Practices

Background

Switzerland is hosting companies that directly or indirectly influence and shape industry practices around the globe. These companies, and hence Switzerland, have a responsibility to adhere to sustainable practices in the commodity, agricultural, food and other industries. Several Swiss institutions have conducted research at the nexus of industry and environmental, social and health impacts, but data and collaboration is scattered. Through the establishment of a Swiss Collaborative Centre for Promoting Sustainable Industry Practices in LMICs, the potential of inter- and transdisciplinary research projects could be fostered for ultimately informing and facilitating a policy dialogue on how the industry can be more strictly engaged for working towards the 2030 SDG agenda.

Objective

The collaborative centre aims to deepen the understanding of how industry practices impact on environmental, social and health indicators in LMICs and to inform and facilitate a policy dialogue on the proposed topic in Switzerland and internationally, with a focus on countries where projects are being implemented.

Expected Benefit

  • Target country: The project will better engage the industry in reducing adverse environmental, social and health impacts, and hence, promote partnership between the public and private sector in working towards the 2030 SDG agenda.
  • In Switzerland: Transparency and accountability of multi-national companies that are either being hosted in Switzerland or are serving Swiss consumers will be promoted. This is in-line with Swiss priority topics, including sustainable consumption and production, sustainable and transparent supply chains, health promotion and disease prevention, and education for sustainable development.
