Food from the oceans

Marine aquaculture, i.e. the farming of organisms living in water, has great potential to provide food from the ocean. A scientific report analyses options to help increase that supply without depriving future generations of their benefits.

On the assumption of responsible culture of capture, the report recommends to develop marine aquaculture globally and to bring all available means to bear on facilitating its development in Europe. Additionally, responsible fisheries management should be advanced and marine ecosystems maintained. Responding to a request from the European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the report will inform Brussels’ policy development and implementation in the coming years.

The report was drafted by an independent, Horizon 2020-funded consortium of European scientific academy networks, which constitutes a key component of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism. “It is encouraging to see repeatedly that the European Commission is dedicated to develop policies that take the available knowledge into account”, says Thierry Courvoisier from Switzerland who presides EASAC (European Academies Science Advisory Council), which is one of these networks.
